Kim Richards, Executive Director, made the announcement at the weekly meeting of the Searcy Lions Club.

Richards reported that FFL Medical has experienced a 30 percent growth rate each year for the past several years, and now serves over 1,000 young women annually. Most clients fall into the 20-24 age group, but women as young as 12 and as old as in their fifties have received services and counseling from FFL Medical.

“Our newest program is called ‘Earn as You Learn,’” reported Richards. “By taking parenting classes, prospective mothers can earn ‘Baby Bucks’ that can be applied toward the purchase of items that we keep stocked in our care closet.”

Lion Cheri Yecke, sponsor of the Harding University Students for Life group, noted that diapers, formula, and other such donations are always welcome. “Members of our group help to ensure that the care closet stays well-stocked. With school starting next week, this prolife group will once again become active on campus.”

Nearly 20 volunteers help to staff the Searcy clinic, which is open three days a week. A new clinic in Heber was opened recently, and is served by 30 volunteers.

The annual fundraising banquet will be held on September 29 at Harding University’s Heritage Center. This ongoing fundraising effort began in November 2010 with a Christmas outreach, and is still continuing as the February 1 deadline nears.

The club is applying to Lions Club International for a grant to double these donations. Searcy Lions Club has until February 1 to try to meet the grant limit of $75,000.

According to Lions Club member Cliff Ganus, Jr., “If other organizations can join us in raising that amount, we can apply to have it doubled to $150,000. Lions Club International is interested in helping efforts such as this.”

Club President Alex Behel is shown here accepting a check from Stephen Burks of Harding University. Burks and a colleague at Harding Academic, Brad Francis, organized a series of basketball tournaments that raised $1,713 for the Sunshine School. “The students had fun while helping a worthy cause. We are proud to be a part of this effort,” said Burks.

Other organizations that have contributed to this fund include the Harding Art Department, White County Central School District, and the Harding Student Association.

“Our hope is that those who were planning a donation in 2011 will do so by February 1. Our partnership with the Searcy Lions Club has given us an opportunity we do not want to pass up,” stated Mary Lou Dunn, Director of the Sunshine School.

Donations will be accepted through February 1, and the Searcy Lions Club will publicly recognize all schools, businesses, and other civic organizations that join them in this effort.

Checks should be made out to the “Searcy Lions Club Sunshine School Fund” and sent to P.O. Box 784, Searcy, AR 72145. In the United States, nearly 300 people per year receive trained dogs through this program.

Members of the Searcy Lions Club support the national Leader Dogs for the Blind program, located in Rochester Hills, Michigan. In addition to providing financial support, a local Lions Club member, Scott Pevehouse, serves as the district chair for these efforts in Arkansas.

“Preferred breeds for training include Golden Retriever, Labrador Retrievers, and German Shepherds,” stated Pevehouse. “Volunteers take puppies into their homes for approximately one year to train them in basic obedience, as well as to socialize them in the community. These dogs must be confident out in public, as their future training includes learning how to assist their owners in navigating busy streets as well as assisting in the daily routine of the owner.”

A twenty-six day residential train program is provided for anyone over the age of 16 who qualifies for a guide dog. Once a new client has learned the basics, he or she can also apply for the Trekker Program, which combines Global Positioning System (GPS) technology with recent advances in hand-held computers and voice technology. Used in conjunction with a guide dog, a Trekker GPS device can pinpoint the user’s exact location and announce streets, intersections, stores, and other points of interest.

According to Lions Club member Bob Simpson, “Currently, the Trekker program is in use in over twenty countries. It takes services to the blind and visually impaired into the twenty first century.”

Anyone interested in more information regarding the Leader Dog Program can contact the Searcy Lions Club at 279-3402.

Special Award Given

Lion Jacob Edwards was recently honored with the prestigious Arkansas Lions Eye Bank and Laboratory Award for his outstanding leadership to both the Lions Club and to his community. Single-handedly, Jacob replaced a slow, manual process with cutting-edge digital technology, propelling the annual acution into the 21st century with his skill and expertise. It is in large thanks to his efforts that the Searcy Lions Club has been able to raise over $50,000 over the past five years - funds that have all been invested in the eye care of White County residents.

Jacob is a Harding student, and he and his wife Laura live in Searcy. He is the son of Alan and Joy Lynn Edwards. Alan, a 26-year member of the Searcy Lions Club, recently was awarded a lifetime membership. This is a clear example of the importance of role models, and in this case, the example of Alan Edwards has resulted in immeasurable value to our community--both through his many years of dedicated service and to the innovation initiative of his son.

Mandy Heaton Joins Lions Club

Mandy Heaton was recently inducted into the Searcy Lions Club. The yearly fundraiser enables the Lions Club to help local adults and children get eye examines and glasses that they might not be able to afford on their own.

“We hope to raise $11,000 and it will be used mostly to help the blind and sight impaired,” said Dr. Clifton Ganus, a member of the Searcy Lions club for more than 50 years. “We also help in community projects such as Boy Scouts and athletics for our youths.”

The items up for bids are donated by local businesses and individuals.

“The merchants in Searcy are exceptionally generous with their donations, and the variety of their donations helps to draw interest to the auction,” Lion Cheri Yecke said. “Typical donations include gift certificates to local businesses — especially restaurants — as well as watches, premium golf balls, green fees, free memberships to local gym and a wide variety of other items.”

The auction has been one of the Lion’s Clubs biggest and most successful fundraising over the past decades. Last year, the club raised $11,000 and helped 130 people in White County pay for eye exams and glasses.

According to Lion Bob Simpson, when the first auction was held 50 years ago, it was broadcast over the radio and Lions members wrote down bids on a chalk board.

“We posted the items on 2 chalk boards, described the item on the air and sold it to the high bidder,” Simpson said. “Everything was done manually, no electronics. Now we have electronics and air conditioning.”

The use of technology has made the auction run more smoothly, but is the enthusiasm and response of the community that makes the event a success.

“The auction provides an opportunity for individuals to pick up good bargains, but at the same time help people at need in White County,” Jacob Edwards, a member of the Lions Club, said.

To bid on items in the auction, listen on the radio on 95.3 KVHU or watch on TV on TV16. The auction will be held Aug. 12-13 from 6-8:30 p.m. and on Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. until all items are sold. First, there is a shortage of specialized personnel ranging from nurses to physicians. Second, there is a growing population of patients who are not able to pay which translated in 2007 to over $5 Million in care provided to patients that the hospital did not receive payment for. Third, technology is ever changing. One example Mr. Montgomery shared was that when the hospital opened in 1967, the whole building and equipment cost $1.2 Million. In 2006, the hospital purchased a 64 slice CT that cost $1.5 Million by itself. Little Rock hospitals are able to obtain technology through philanthropic means not available to WCMC.

Teresa Ferricher, Emergency Department Director at White County Medical Center

Teresa Ferricher, Emergency Department Director at White County Medical Center, recently gave an update on the hospital's Emergency Department to the Searcy Lions Club. Judge Lincoln suggested that community leaders need to be educated about and prepared to deal with the issues that commonly accompany large amounts of money and business. He spoke of possible challenges that will come about as the road systems in the county become more stressed because of the increased large vehicle traffic. The judge was upbeat and enthusiastic about the potential for good that could come to White County, but cautioned those in attendance to beware of the tendency to "love money" rather than use it wisely. "These indeed are the best of times... and the worst of times," he said.

Norine Westerbeck Speaks to the Lions

Dan Rightmire is presenting a check from the Lion's Club to Norine Westerbeck, Coordinator of Yorktown Bay, Arkansas's Camp for Blind Children. This elected official is over voter registration, pays the county bills and is also the Probate Court clerk also. This office keeps the files for the three White County Probate Judges, keeps track of wills and adoptions, marriage licences, and quorum court files. This is also where one goes to file for office, and ministers file their credentials here. Every other year, this office also oversees elections. Next year, Arkansas will have it's primary elections in February.

Chuck Hicks Becomes a Lion

Chuck Hicks is the newest Searcy Lion. Although the food was very good, logistics for a meeting were difficult.

Arkansas Travelers Come to the Lions

March 27, 2007 - Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations for the Arkansas Travelers, Phil Elson, spoke to the Lions Club today. Elson has been the radio announcer for the Travelers for the past 6 years. This year's games will be heard on 101.1 FM as well as on the Travelers website www.travs.com. The new field, Dickey-Stephens Park, will open April 12 to an anticipated capacity crowd near 10,000 people.

Named after the Dickey brothers of Baseball fame and the Stephens brothers of Arkansas roots, this new park embodies a lot of history. The Little Rock Travelers began in 1896 and have carried the name Travelers ever since, the oldest club in minor league Baseball to do so. The new stadium resembles a train station, a salute to Little Rock as a train center. The park's outfield gives way to the Little Rock skyline. Seat prices will still be $6 for general admission, and parking will be $3.

New Fundraiser Presentation

March 20, 2007 - Lion Steve Miguet gave a brief presentation on a new fund raiser for the club. It involves collecting used cell phones and turning them in to be recycled. Boxes will be distributed to member businesses and as phones are collected, Lion Miguet will send them to the company. Within 5 days, this company will mail us a check for the phones collected. Another Lions Club in a similar size town was able to raise $400 in 3 months. There are no expenses to the club in this project, so all funds will go back to our community projects. While this project will continue year-round, occasionally we can make an extra effort on a weekend or in conjunction with our Omelet Supper to collect additional phones.

Lion Bobby Holland distributed assignments for the Omelet Supper which is scheduled for April 24th at the First Baptist Church. Tickets should be available by our next meeting. The success of this fund raiser depends on members doing their part.

The new member drive to "Net 7 by 7/07" has been very successful. Please continue to invite people to our lunch meetings.

Our regular lunch meeting was at Doc's Grill today. And that is as it should be. Lovely, desirable ladies won't wait. You have to go out and grab 'em.
I am your opportunity. I am knocking at your door. I want to be adopted. The legend doesn't say what you are to do when several beautiful opportunities present themselves at the same door. I guess you have to choose the one you love best. I hope you will adopt me. I am the youngest here, and what I offer you is full of splendid opportunities for service.
The American Foundation for the Blind is only four years old. It grew out of the imperative needs of the blind, and was called into existence by the sightless themselves. It is national and international in scope and in importance. It represents the best and most enlightened thought on our subject that has been reached so far. Its object is to make the lives of the blind more worthwhile everywhere by increasing their economic value and giving them the joy of normal activity.
Try to imagine how you would feel if you were suddenly stricken blind today. Picture yourself stumbling and groping at noonday as in the night; your work, your independence, gone. In that dark world wouldn't you be glad if a friend took you by the hand and said, "Come with me and I will teach you how to do some of the things you used to do when you could see"? That is just the kind of friend the American Foundation is going to be to all the blind in this country if seeing people will give it the support it must have.
You have heard how through a little word dropped from the fingers of another, a ray of light from another soul touched the darkness of my mind and I found myself, found the world, found God. It is because my teacher learned about me and broke through the dark, silent imprisonment which held me that I am able to work for myself and for others. It is the caring we want more than money. The gift without the sympathy and interest of the giver is empty. If you care, if we can make the people of this great country care, the blind will indeed triumph over blindness.
The opportunity I bring to you, Lions, is this: To foster and sponsor the work of the American Foundation for the Blind. Will you not help me hasten the day when there shall be no preventable blindness; no little deaf, blind child untaught; no blind man or woman unaided? I appeal to you Lions, you who have your sight, your hearing, you who are strong and brave and kind. Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?
I thank you.

Next Meetings

March 20th - Our regular meeting will be at Doc's Grill at 1301 East Beebe-Capps. River Oaks Village began as the dream of E.D. Yancey and Dr. Robert Elliott. It is an independent living community promoting a safe and secure living environment to its residents. 14 new apartments were recently added and are already spoken for. A new assisted living facility located just to the east of River Oaks Village will open this Summer with 40 units.
